Aliya Lewis, Opinion Writer

Aliya Lewis is a fifteen-year-old sophomore and a member of the graduating class of 2020. She is originally from California. This is Aliya’s second year in journalism and she is currently writing for the Opinion content area for the school newspaper at East. She enjoys writing for Opinion because she is able to write about topics that are controversial in today’s society. She enjoys being able to spark people’s interest through her writing and having what she writes about to become a topic of conversation. Aliya chose journalism as a class because of her love for reading and writing and this class will help her further her skill set for her dream job which is being an editor and chief at a renowned publishing company. She aspires to graduate from New York University (NYU) with a Double Doctoral Degree in her preferred majors of English and Creative Writing and a Double Masters Degree in her preferred minors of Political Science, World Religions, and Financial Literacy. She is very proud of her half Hispanic and half African American Nationalities. She is Hispanic from her mother’s side of the family and African American from her father’s side of the family. She lives with her mom here in Salt Lake City, whereas her father and his half of her family lives in California. Aliya has an older brother named Kymondre who is seventeen years old and a younger brother named Treyshawn who is fifteen years old. Both of her siblings live in California with her father. Aliya is currently in the process of figuring out how to acquire her learner's permit even though she is completely terrified of driving. During her free time, which is the time she is not spending it with her family, who she adores, or in school; Aliya enjoys listening to Rap and Latin music, drawing, reading and hanging out with friends.
