Megan is Missing Faces its Comeback through Tiktok

Mishelle Arellano, Writer

Besides being an app in which most people record themselves dancing, Tik Tok also has its own side in which it informs us about the latest coverage going on in the media. But it’s not always about the most recent stuff; cultural artifacts from decades become popular on TikTok as well.Whether it be the old fashion trends, music videos or even movies, this app doesn’t miss a thing. As said before, movies tend to be pretty popular within these users by giving us a little taste of everything and having their own opinion on them, leaving it up to us to decide whether we should join the wave of watching it or not.

The most recent one that had TikTok flooding with videos has been the reviews people have  had on Megan Is Missing. Without giving too much detail to respect those who don’t have TikTok or haven’t seen this,it’s a horror film that was released back in 2011 and is based on a combination of true child abduction stories that make up one single story. You can just imagine how chilling it might be! Although based on the reviews the audience of TikTok gave out early November for this horror film and seeing each one of the different face expressions they give out when recording themselves, it is understandable as to why many seem to categorize it as ”traumatizing“ and “gruesome”. Some may recommend it, but others prefer to warn the rest of the people to watch it at their own risk, especially the younger audience. Within these people,Michale Goi,the director of Megan Is Missing himself, has made a video of his own explaining how he would’ve liked to give out customary warnings to people  before watching this film. “ Do not watch this movie alone in the middle of the night  “ or “You have 4 seconds to shut off the movie.. before you start seeing some things that maybe you don’t want to see” were some of the few customary warnings Goi was talking about. While these types of movies always have horror fans on board, not everyone was a fan of it regardless of whether they are horror fans or not. This film has had a lot of controversy behind it, many of which we are aware of aren’t the most positive to hear, which is probably why New Zealand banned it  in their country. The reason behind the banning of the film in New Zealand was due to its “objectionable” nature.

So, thank you TikTok for being so kind and sharing these traumatizing horror films out to the public! We enjoy getting freaked out in the middle of the night and maybe even possibly for the rest of our life. That being said, if you have not been able to watch this film, are you willing to take the risk?
