Did the brand Nike know the possible consequences that would come along with making an advertisement with the former NFL player Colin Kaepernick? Nike did not seem to care when they suddenly released an advertisement video with Kaepernick other athletes, their message was “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything”. This statement was very controversial to a majority of the public especially NFL football fans. The controversy started with Kaepernick himself. On September 1, 2016 Kaepernick was convinced to kneel for the national anthem instead of sit, which is what he had been doing, he was trying to protest the oppression of people of color in the United Stated and the ongoing issue of police brutality. Kneeling for the national anthem was seen in most people’s eyes as disrespectful or degrading to the soldiers that fight for our country and give us the right for the national anthem. “Easy way to make sure you’re NOT the starting QB on opening day” -Matthew Hasselbeck (former quarterback) Many people knew that it would cause Kaepernick problems and it very clearly did because he is no longer allowed to play in the NFL due to his actions.
The brand Nike took a very big risk to make the advertisement and their opinion on the subject public. They were a lot of potential risks. Nike is doing better than ever, their stocked tanked instantly but after time they got to an all time high and their sales went up tremendously. “Anytime I talk to my team about that, if there’s personal beliefs or whatever that keep you from doing it, I understand. But at the same time, you know, you’ve got to look at the gifts that we have, the opportunity that we have to play a great game is through the men and women that serve our country. I think that’s an opportunity right there just to show respect, and I think that’s why when you see our team, every one of us are on that line and that’s kind of our way of giving thanks” -Rex Ryan, former head coach. As shown in this quote large numbers of proper feel that it is disrespecting the soldiers fighting for our country. Soldiers responded to people saying this and they began to post images on instagram with them and their nike gear saying they support the message. This surprised a lot of people but the majority of soldiers responding were on Kaepernick’s side. Colin Kaepernick was kicked out of the NFL since the actinomycetes of taking a knee, Nike created their advertisement to their side on the complication. Neither Nike or Kaepernick has been negatively impacted from this advertisement, there has been sky backlash but in the long run and grand scheme of things they are both benefiting. Nike knew the possible negative effects but they proceeded to promote this and it had done nothing but good for them over all. This makes you spark the question if the NFL will let Kaepernick back in the league or not.
