On April 4th, 2017, there was an attack in Khan Shaykhun, Syria, that killed about 78 people who were seeking safety in basements. 43 of those people showed  signs of being exposure to chlorine and sarin gas which are highly toxic chemicals. These are the chemicals that were supposedly used by Bashar al-Assad, but Russia and Iran, who are Syria’s allies, have denied that President Assad’s government used the chemical weapons. Russia has also said that the attack was “staged” by the Britain and anti-Assad rebels.

Amani, who is a survivor of the chemical attack was speaking to the National Public Radio, said that the years of war have affected her health. The chemical attack caused even more damage to her weak lungs. She explains how her throat started to close up when the gas came in. She described it feeling as if she were fighting death. Her children are in critical health and their futures are unclear.

On April 13th, 2018 the United States, France, and Britain came together and conducted a strike. They all expressed satisfaction at how everything turned out. The targets selected were only the chemical facilities. This was the beginning of Trump’s effort to force Assad to stop using these banned weapons. “These are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead,” Trump said. France said that they have proof that chlorine was used by Assad, but this proof has not been released to the public. They took patients to the hospital with a strong smell of chlorine with all different symptoms of cyanosis, cornea irritation, and foaming of the mouth.

After the chemical attack, Chris Hedges, an American journalist, said, “We now live in a nation where doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy.” We don’t like to be confronted with the truth about our nation and what’s happening around us. We all choose to believe that we can fix whatever is happening by giving the right politicians power, but that doesn’t always work out.

Assad has suffered no serious consequences for these decisions that he has supposedly made. Not all hope has been lost for the Syrian citizens, Trump fears that he could put the American lives in a civil war, but he knows that he can’t just sit around and watch innocent people die. We know this because he tweeted saying that Assad using chemical weapons on his own citizens is sick.
